FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Menhaden Matter StatementOn the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission Adopting Meaningful Menhaden Harvest Limits for the Chesapeake BayThe following is a statement from Menhaden Matter regarding Governor Tim Kaine's action to seek compliance with the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission decision to limit the industrial harvest of menhaden in the Chesapeake Bay. "We applaud the ASMFC for taking action today that will allow the cap on the industrial harvest on menhaden in the Chesapeake Bay to take immediate effect. The decision today will also allow important scientific research to be conducted to ensure the protection of what many call ‘the most important fish in the sea’ and the Chesapeake waters that it calls home." "We commend the governors of Virginia and Maryland, in particular, for recognizing the important role that the AMSFC and interstate cooperation plays in protecting the Chesapeake Bay and our shared marine resources.
